Garage Door Safety Month: 5 Tests Every Property Owner Should Perform
Why Garage Door Safety Matters
Garage doors can weigh hundreds—or even thousands—of pounds. Without proper safety features and routine checks, they can pose serious risks to people, vehicles, and property. That’s why Garage Door Safety Month is the perfect time to review essential safety tests every property owner should know.
Here are five simple checks recommended by the professionals at E.A.S.E. Construction.
1. The Auto-Reverse Test
Place a solid object (like a 2×4) under the door. When closing, the door should reverse immediately upon contact. If it doesn’t, your system needs service.
2. Photo-Eye Sensor Test
Wave an object in front of the sensors while the door is closing. The door should stop and reverse. Misaligned or dirty sensors are a common safety issue.
3. Balance Test
Disconnect the opener and manually lift the door halfway. If it doesn’t stay in place, the springs may be worn—this is not a DIY fix and should be handled by professionals.
4. Visual Hardware Inspection
Look for frayed cables, rusted springs, loose bolts, or bent tracks. These signs indicate wear that could lead to sudden failure.
5. Noise & Movement Check
Grinding, squealing, or jerky movement often signals mechanical issues that compromise safety and performance.
When to Call a Professional
If your door fails any of these tests, it’s time to call a licensed expert. E.A.S.E. Construction provides professional inspections and maintenance across Idaho, Utah, and Montana—keeping homes and facilities safe year-round.
